Lucy Crawford beats Canterburys best
16 June 2015
Rising South Canterbury junior tennis player Lucy Crawford, has just shown Canterburys best how it’s done. Crawford, aged 9, attends Cannington School and was unbeaten last week in the Canterbury Spring Open Tournament 9’s grade, coming away with the singles title and doubles title with partner Renae Smith from Greymouth.
Displaying her trademark steely determination and unwavering concentration, Crawford disposed of all 4 opponents in the round robin format, needing 3 sets to overcome each of the 1st and 2nd seeds and surviving a tiebreaker set in another match. Whilst her forehand is her natural weapon, her ability to stay calm gives Crawford the complete package and will serve her well moving forward.
Sister rivalry may have been a motivating force behind her win, with older sister Kate also having won the Canterbury 9’s singles and doubles last year.
