The South Canterbury Junior Closed Championships were held on Saturday 27 February at the SC Tennis Centre. While numbers were down the quality of tennis was of a high standard. The stand-out match of the afternoon was the battle on court between Matt Ellis and George McAleer to decide the Boys 14s winner. After 2 hours 22 minutes George McAleer took the title in 3 sets: 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
There were a number of newcomers to tournament tennis including Isla Crawford and Johnson Cleland in the Mixed 8s; Harry Reith and Malachy Johnson in the Boys 10s; and Aaron Kavanaugh in the Boys 12s.
Luke Melville from Highfield club won the Boys 10s title playing off against fellow club member Malachy Johnson in the final. Luke won 5-4(2), 4-2. In the Girls 10s, Lucy Crawford from Cave Club eventuated the winner from the round robin draw, with Arabella Acland (Hilton-Geraldine) in 2nd place and Jess Aldridge (Highfiled) in 3rd place.
The biggest field was in the Boys 12s with 12 players entered in this grade. Connor Crotty from Cave club won the final 6-4, 6-0 against young Jock Rollinson (Cave) with Shay Young (Hilton-Geraldine) finishing up in 3rd place. In the Girls 12s, Kate Crawford and Brianna Howell played off for the title with Kate winning 6-1, 6-0.
Players will receive their trophy’s at the SC Junior Prize-Giving – Thursday 31 March, 2016.
