This coming Queens Birthday Weekend, Tennis South Canterbury is hosting the annual South Island Invitational Teams event for 10s and 12s here at the SC Tennis Centre.  Over 80 young junior players will be taking part.  There are five associations bringing teams of 16-20 players including Southland, Canterbury City, Canterbury Country, Tasman and South Canterbury.
There are three trophies ups for grabs: ‘Winner of the 10s Grade’,  ”Winner of the 12s Grade’ and Overall Winner.  In each tie, a team plays 4 boys singles matches, 2 boys doubles matches, 4 girls singles matches and 2 doubles matches, per age grade.  Each match won earns one point and the winner of the tie is awarded two bonus points.
Play gets underway on Saturday morning at 9am with South Canterbury meeting Tasman first up. The South Canterbury team has several newcomers to representative tennis including Johnson Cleland, George Lister, Tom Taylor, Isla McKay, Isla Crawford, Emma Campbell.  They will join Luke Melville, and Jess Aldridge in the SC 10s Team.
The SC 12s Team have mostly all played at a rep level before with one newcomer Megan Rawlins joining the team. The 12s team: Jock Rollinson, Ryan Paul, Max Wilson, Max Taylor, Kate and Lucy Crawford, Brianna Howell, Molly Kate Morrison and Rawlins.
Canterbury City once again look to be the team to beat although the emphasis of this teams event is on development and there will be special awards made in each age group team.  Coach/managers will nominate a boy and girl in each age grade and could be for óutstanding effort’, ‘team player’, ‘fairplay’, or ‘most improved over the weekend’.

Saturday night will see the players all enjoy an evening meal together at the tennis centre which helps foster friendships between the players.
