Future of Tennis Discussion Document
It is important that we consider the future delivery of tennis in South Canterbury as we face pressure on playing numbers as well as considerable upcoming maintenance costs of the Trust Aoraki Tennis Centre.
What will tennis look like in South Canterbury over the next 10 to 20 years plus? How and where will it be delivered?
This discussion document seeks to table options with clubs, to allow feedback to be received and for the tennis community as a whole to be heard and to have input.

Just a few thoughts after reading the Tennis Future Document
Have the people who have left tennis (Seniors and juniors) been asked why they have stopped? So we can have an idea of what tennis is up against?
Demographics of tennis should be looked at. Which demographic groups are playing it? Which groups are not playing it (thus untapped numbers).
Is this a NZ wide trend for tennis or a Sth Canty trend?
Any support from NZ Tennis?
I think the roof is a good idea for comfort and availability all year, but how does this go against the “Balance is Better” idea?

Thank you for taking the time to read our document and to share your thoughts. Feedback is a vital part of this process.
We wanted to answer the questions you have asked:
• While there is anecdotal feedback on the variance in numbers (and also the challenges of all sports and not just tennis in retaining players) clubs are not formally following up and reporting on those who don’t renew that we are aware. It’s a thought that we could do so on their behalf, if they allow that.
• The Document itself does look at demographics and a table is included which gives an idea of where player movement has been. Bearing in mind that we have been successful in beginning to rebuild numbers and their has been significant planning on new initiatives and targeting particular groups.
• Yes, this is a NZ wide trend and one which Tennis NZ is applying resources to.
• In our view the roof only works if there is a need from another sport and, in fact, that the complex itself becomes multi-use.
